Flash Scene Shakespeare

Class, this is the post where I detail some of my ideas regarding the Flash Scene Shakespeare.  First, I'll give Chris due credit because his idea originally led to the flash mob Shakespeare idea.  For those of you who haven't seen any flash mob events, check out Improv Everywhere's YouTube channel.  Basically we all get together and do some type of Shakespeare performance in a public area, to the surprise of the complete strangers walking by.  (The photo included here is of a famous annual no-pants flash mob--ours will be more conservative.)  At any rate, to this we'll need to brainstorm ideas for a performance that the the whole class can take part in.  Ideally, we would choose something that wouldn't single out anyone person, so that we can all be in this together (i.e. everyone gets to feel like an idiot).  We'll need to select a place and time, and everyone needs to come and be prepared.  So on with the brainstorming!  Please comment below.  I'll start with my ideas:

  • We need to choose a public place--I'm thinking on campus or maybe at the University mall, or Walmart on a Saturday.  Something like that.
  • Performance ideas: We all memorize the same monologue an simultaneously perform it

I'm totally down with this. I think it'd be interesting to have a bunch of us memorize a line from the "To Be Or Not to Be" soliloquy and go into the Wilk Terrace. Then someone could stand up and start it and each person could stand up after reciting their line. We could all recite the ending of it together or something. We could do some other monologue, that one's just really famous.

At any rate, whatever your idea is, count me in. (:
I posted some ideas on my blog at: http://speareme.blogspot.com/2011/01/flash-mob-he...
if you want to check them out. Let me know if anything sounds promising.
I'm for doing it somewhere else other than campus. There's been a surplus of flashmobs already in front of the library. There was just a lightsabre battle. I like the idea of incorporating music somehow. There is a song in the film version of "Much Ado About Nothing" and Stacy Kent sings a Christopher Marlowe poem in Richard III. Well, whatever you do I want in!
Yes, there are a lot of flashmobs on campus, but I think we will have a higher attendance rate if people feel like it will be easy for them to come without having to worry about finding transportation? What do you guys think? But I think this would be really fun and a memorable experience, so I am definitely down.
I am perfectly willing to drive to SLC if it means not performing on campus! I think you'll find more than one person that will agree to driving if it comes down to it.
I think it might be more interesting if we were to recite a scene rather than a monologue though. It gives it more variation.

I don't care where we perform. I think it could be cool to do an epic battle scene. have people dueling and each pair recites a line from a different epic battle of Shakespeare. And as one person is victorious and another dies, the next pair starts to fight. Or something like this, I am up for anything really so count me in!
Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm deferring to Whitney for a "final" decision, and we'll try to get this organized!
I also want to be involved! Let me know the details!
